The Physics A-Level course at Rainhill Sixth Form aims to develop theoretical and applied Physics through practical skills, data analysis and problem solving.

Course Aims

With a focus on quality, high expectations and logic skills, we aim to offer an enjoyable and challenging course leading to further study or employment in a wide range of fields. We offer exciting field trips to further your experience, such as CERN, Daresbury and University of Manchester.

Entry Requirements

Ideally an EBACC student with average GCSE profile of grade 6 and all Science modules at grade 6 or better. It is highly recommended that you are also studying A-level Maths to complement your understanding of certain aspects of the course.


Following completion of the course students can continue onto degree study in Physics, both applied and theoretical, Mathematics or Engineering. This could lead to careers in fields such as Accelerator Operator, Applications Engineer, Data Analyst, Design Engineer, IT Consultant, Lab Technician or Laser Engineer.

Awarding Body

AQA A-level Physics. This is a level 3 qualification.


Assessment is based on three separate written examinations, each 2 hours long.

Paper 1 and paper 2 are each worth 34% of the overall qualification and are a combination of short and long answers as well as 25 multiple choice questions.

Paper 3 is a written paper with questions on practical skills, data analysis and on one optional topic. This is worth 32% of the overall qualification.
