This year, applications to Oxbridge Universities have doubled at Rainhill Sixth form. Further, there has been nearly a 30% increase in interview offers. This is excellent news for our Elite Group students and all who work with them.
Since 2016, numbers of Oxbridge applications and interview offers have consistently risen. This has been in conjunction with the acceleration of Elite Group activities. The Elite group offers personalised support to the most academically able students, to ensure excellent exam results and outstanding destinations.
Progression Mentor, Jo Morrell said, “Our staff and students have worked hard over the past two years and this has been rewarded! From offering mock interviews, feedback on mock admissions tests or taking them to Oxbridge conferences, it really has been a team effort. Together, we have seen the students achieve their potential. We couldn’t be happier”
The students really do appreciate it too. Mia Metcalfe, who has applied to study Maths at Cambridge University commented, “The mock interview was helpful, it was good to get feedback and this helped me in the real thing as I had more confidence”. Charlotte Swadkins agreed. Referring to the curve ball questions, set up to test resilience in their mock interviews she said, “When you are prepared for even the weirdest questions, it helps”.
Charlotte gained the highest GCSE points score in her cohort and has applied to study Law at Cambridge University. She feels the Oxbridge experience has helped her gain confidence too. “It’s helped me to realise I’m alright with meeting new people and I feel more confident moving away and starting University”.
Gabriel Dale took it one-step further saying, “I actually enjoyed it! It was like a conversation and it was good to discuss my subject in such depth”. Gabriel has applied to study Medicine at Cambridge University and enjoyed the challenging discussions about Biology the most.
Mr David Hemsley, Director of Rainhill Sixth Form commented, “I have been so impressed the work ethic of our Elite group since I started in September. Each one of them is a credit to their family, to themselves and to us. They have shown they are one of the best academic prospects in our country.”
Asking what they have learnt about themselves from the process, Johnathan Ackers reflected, “I learnt I was alright at making small talk with people! I was nervous about sitting in the waiting room and how tense it would be with strangers, but it wasn’t, we chatted freely as we were all in the same boat.” Johnathan has applied to study Computer Science at Cambridge University after cementing his love of the subject through work experience in London.
Lochlan Chadwick, agreed, “I feel much more confident and able to adapt to new and uncomfortable situations and this will help me in September and further in the future.” Lochlan is our only Oxford University applicant this year and has applied to study Biochemistry.
The students now have a nerve-wracking wait to the middle of January when they will find out whether they have made the grade. Whatever the outcome, Rainhill Sixth Form are immensely proud of all of them. Mr John Pout, Executive Head of Rainhill High School and Sixth Form said, “It has been lovely to see these students grow through the Elite programme. They went off to Oxford or Cambridge University interviews with confidence, maturity and a genuine passion for their subject. I am so proud of them all and they all deserve to have a long rest and a celebration of their achievements over Christmas”.
